EVERY cyclist, whether they’re road racers, time trailist, hill climb specialist, mountain bikers or recreational riders all want to be able to do one thing – climb more easily.

When you sit in front of a TV and watch the great climbers in action, it really is humbling. It's so difficult to even comprehend how such scrawny little guys can suddenly turn on superhuman powers and fly up mountains as if on a motorbike, at speeds most of us mere mortals struggle to manage on the flat.

DESPITE the bitterly cold and damp winter weather, a crowd of Liverpool Mercury riders were happy enough to make their way out to Hunters Hill last Sunday for the club's annual Hill Climbing Championships at 11am.

Ray Pugh was the easy winner in 3m;7sec, closely followed by Ricardo Garcia (3m;59sec), Neil Coakly (4m;38sec), Dan Kenyon (4m;42sec), Neil Russel (4m;47sec), John Monaghan (5m;30sec), Jim Kay (5m;41sec).

Well done lads. Personally, I was too hungover and, as Tony Mac puts it, a bit of a 'namby-pamby' to brave the cold and have a go. Hence why I watched from the sidelines. Maybe next year - once I lose about three stone and get helium filled tyres.

Brrrrr, it's cold outside

BRRRRRRRRHHHH. It’s getting to that dreaded time of year when the days get shorter and the weather gets more miserable than it has been all year.

Most cyclists will take a few weeks off to let their bodies recover from a season packed full of intense training and even more strenuous racing.

But others will use the following months to begin preparations for next season and tailoring this period to achieve their new goals for the forthcoming year.
