HSBC on Coronation Road in Crosby, Merseyside
MASKED raiders smashed their way into a bank using a keg of beer only to be foiled by a Liverpool cyclist and his bike, writes Lyndsay Young.
The balaclava-clad bunglers, wearing high-visibility jackets, arrived at the HSBC Bank in Coronation Road, Crosby, carrying the keg and a ladder.
After hurling the beer through a window, the three men were trying to climb into the bank when they were spotted by a cyclist passing by.
Springing into action, the man threw his bike at the raiders who ran off empty-handed and escaped in a maroon getaway car.
The attempt happened at around 4.30pm, just after closing time, on Friday while staff were still on the premises.
Hearing the window smash, the staff ran into the back office to call police who were quickly on the scene.
The men later made a failed attempt to burn out the car, which is now being examined by the forensics team. They also left behind the ladder, which is also being looked at by investigators.
Many people were in the area at the time and police officers have taken a number of witness statements.
A Merseyside Police spokesman said: “We found the car later. They had attempted to burn it out but it didn’t work. We have forensics looking at that.
A HSBC spokeswoman said: “The staff follow set procedures to get the police there as soon as possible.
The bank was closed as normal over the weekend and opened as usual on Monday but a cash machine on the premises was left out of action.
