RIBBLE Valley CRC junior Lewis Balyckyi took the Under-16s Group ‘A’ leaders jersey and top points in the Terry Dolan Schoolboy Races hosted by Southport Cycling Club.
Balyckyi, who is earning a reputation for early breakaways after sneaking away from the Elite riders at the Eddie Soens Memorial Race back in early March, had notched up an impressive gap on the chasing group almost from the start of the 20-lap race at Victoria Park last Saturday.
He proved too strong for the rest of the bunch and romped home with a sizeable 11-second gap remaining as he crossed the finish line to take the overall lead with 17 points and the under-16s Yellow Jersey, plus a Dolan track frame.
Following closely behind was Sport Velo City siblings Simon and Adam Yates, while Laurie Brooking (Buxton CC), Chris Sherriffs (Sport Velo City), Martin Woffindin (Sport Velo City), Jack Penrice (Sport Velo City) and Matt Waters (Ribble Valley CRC).
Southport CC junior Andy Judge, who made his racing debut, put in a spirited performance despite losing distance on the leading pack due to mechanical problems and finishing 10th. The youngster never let his head go down and chased the pack with every ounce of energy that he had left. Well done, Andy.
