A PREMATURE celebration just yards from the finishing line cost Tom Last the chance of a first win in the senior ranks for the Southport based Kinesis UK Racing Team, writes Paul Mayor.

Tom who was part of a six man squad from Kinesis who were competing in the Chas Messenger Two Day, an event in the British Cycling Premier Calendar series, held over three stages in Buckinghamshire.

The first stage, a 5km prologue time trial was followed after a short break by a 120km road stage on Saturday, finished by a stage three on Sunday, another road stage but over 140km. After day one, the Kinesis team were reasonably pleased with their efforts as Matt Cronshaw took a creditable fifth place on the 120km road stage while Josh James held the green points jersey. As stage three came to a conclusion the field were all together for the final sprint after a three man breakaway was recaptured.

On the run in Tom Last made his bid for victory as he surged past Rob Hayles in the final 100m but as he threw up his arms just a little early to claim the win Russell Downing made a thrust for the line and snatched first place by less than a quarter of a wheel.

Tom was philosophical after the race saying “he felt a bit stupid” but he’s not in bad company. Tom Boonen, 2005 World Champion, did the very same thing only a few weeks ago when he was beaten on the line by Mark Cavendish in a race in Belgium.
