MERSEYSIDE Wheelers will once again be hosting their annual 'A Day In Lancashire Tourist Trial', which starts in Lydiate and then heads out towards Belmont and takes in some of the best country cycling routes in Lancashire before heading back to Lydiate this Sunday (May 11).
The total time recommended to complete the course is eight hours and includes the stops at Appley Bridge and Brindle. Organisers advise riders not to treat the event as a training ride and instead enjoy the lanes and surrounding countryside.
Drinks will be provided at the start, tea and biscuits at the Appley Bridge control, beans on toast, tea and cakes at the Brindle control, while sandwiches can be brougth with you to supplement the food supplied at Brindle. Cakes and tea will be provided at the finish.
Starting time is 9-9.45am and riders must ensure they get their logs signed at the start and at Appley Bridge, Brindle, Rufford and, finally, back at Lydiate.
There will be awards to all finishers, trophies for club of DA with the most finishers, but if you are unable to complete the course for any reason you must inform the organisers after 2pm on 07789 177292.

Start: Lydiate Parish Hall (A5147)
(Headquarters Ossie Dover Fellowship)
Upon leaving the hall turn R on the A5147 in the direction of Southport for ¼ mile. Take 1st R into Hall Lane bearing R at grass triangle and over Canal Bridge, to take 1st L into Sudell Lane bearing left into Swan Lane, continue to X roads A59 Northway (2.08) straight across into continuation of Swan Lane to X roads, where straight across into Smithy Lane. Continue to take 2nd R into Sandy Lane leading to Mickering Lane (2.61).
Proceed to X roads at Derby Arms straight across into Bowkers Green Lane SP. Royal Oak and continue to next X roads A506 (4.47). Turn L on A50-6 and take 1st L into Graveyard Lane proceed to T junction and turn L and take the next R into Croppers Lane, bearing right at grass triangle and continue merging into Poppy Lane to T junction turn R to junction with A570 (7/49) straight across into Scarth Hill Lane.
Continue to T junction and turn R into Whiteleys Lane. Continue and take 2nd L into school Lane. Proceed down to T junction (A577) WestHead (9.00). Turn L and in 200 yards turn R at the Halton Castle Inn into Castle Lane continue down to X roads where straight across into Sandy Lane and proceed to T junction (10.39). Turn R and continue on this lane till you arrive a T junction (B5240).
Turn L andL again at Mini Roundabout into (A5209) Briars Lane SP Southport (12.23) proceed for about 100 yards and take 1st R into Ring-o-Bells Lane SP Hoscar/Mawdesley. Continue over Canal Bridge and take 1st R into Hollowford Lane follow this Lane over Canal Bridge to take 1st L at top of rise into Back Lane. Continue until you arrive at a Mini Roundabout at the (A5209) Newburgh Village (14.19).
Turn L on the A5209 and down to the next mini Roundabout turn R into Higher Lane. Continue and club to take 1st L into Lees Lane SP Appley Bridge and continue along Lane to T junction. Turn L into Appley Lane South and continue over Canal Bridge passing Appley Bridge Railway Station to Appley Bridge Village Hall CONTROL ON L (18.26).
On leaving hall turn L and climb up to X roads (A5209) Dicconson Arms and go straight across into Robin Hood Lane to take 3rd L into Courage Low Lane SP Mawdesley. Continue and take 1st R into Tunley Lane (SP Shevington) (20.26) Continue to T junction turn R into Mossy Lea Road (B 5250) Continue and turn L into Boundary Lane over M6 Motorway and continue to 2nd Mini Roundabout.
Turn R onto A49 continue and make a L turn into Pole Street just short of Traffic Lights centre of Standish (SP Aspull, Haigh) (B5239) (23.36) Carry onto T junction (The Black Bull) and turn L continue to descend (Take care traffic lights a Narrow Bridge) to T junction (mini roundabout) turn R (SP Wigan) proceed and in about 100 yds turn L at roundabout into Redrock Lane (SP Haigh Hall). Continue and climb over Canal Bridge (Traffic Lighted) and continue to climb to make a L turn into Meadow Pit Lane (SP Blackrod) (26.58) Continue and turn L at Little Scotland into Dark Lane immediately after traffic signal and speed camera sign (27.61) Proceed down to X roads and straight across into Grimeford Lane. Proceed to X roads (A673) where straight across into unnamed lane, continue and climb up to grass triangle and turn L (SP Rivington) proceed and take 1st R into Horrobin Lane (SP Rivington) proceed over Rivington Reservoir Causeway and turn L into Sheephouse Lane (SP Belmont) (30.64).
Stay on this Lane over Belmont Moor and down to T junction at Belmont Village (34.13) Turn L onto A675 (SP Preston) continue on the A675 through Abbey Village to Motorway M65 (40.46 under Motorway to A675 (SP Walton Le Dale). Continue to T junction turn L at A675 (SP Walton Le Dale) after ¼ mile take 1st L into Sandy Lane (SP B5256) through to Brindle Village and take 1st L into Water Street (Church/Cavendish Arm) to CONTROL LUNCH AT Brindle Village Hall on your Left (43.23)
On leaving hall turn L and climb through Top oth Lane Village to turn L at foot of Motorway Bridge into Birchin Lane (SP Wheelton). Descend with care, climb up over Canal Bridge to T junction, turn R and descend to T junction. Turn L into Waterhouse Green passing the Roebuck Inn and up to T junction (47.16).
Turn R on (A6) and in 100yds turn L into Dawson Lane continue to traffic lights turn R (SP Leyland B5248) straight through next roundabout to traffic lights were straight across into Heald House Road (SP Leyland B5248).
Continue to 1st Mini Roundabout straight across and turn L at 2nd mini roundabout into Langdale Road (SP Runshaw College) (49.43) Proceed to T junction and turn L into Holt Brow and continue to T junction. Turn R (SP Croston) continue past the Plough Inn and take 1st R into Flag Lane (SP unsuitable for Motor Vehicles) (51.70) and proceed to T junction. Turn L onto B5253 and continue to mini roundabout turn R onto A581 (SP Croston) and take 1st L into Lydiate Lane (SP Eccleston B5250) over bridge continuing through Eccleston to turn R at top of main drag into Bannister Lane at Oceans Apart/Flair (shops) (54.48).
Proceed to take 3rd R into Bentley Lane (SP Mawdesley/Parbold) (First R is a no through Road) (56.00) Continue and turn at 2nd R into Moody Lane (blue sign “unsuitable for Heavy Goods Vehicles”) (57.09). Down to T junction and turn L at Bradshaw Lane and take 1st R into Gorsey Lane continue to X roads straight over into Smithy Lane (SP Rufford) continue to T junction and turn R into Meadow Lane (SP Rufford) B5246 continue over Railway crossing to T junction A59 (60.53) turn L and almost immediately R into Holmswood Road B5246 (SP Southport) continue for 22 yds and turn L into Brick Kiln Lane. Continue and bearing L into Curlew Lane CONTROL (61.63).
Continue onto T junction turning R into Red Cat Lane/Tarlscough Lane and take 1st L into Marsh Moss Lane (62.93) continue over level crossing into New Lane taking 1st R into Gorst lane (SP Martin Inn) continue past Martin inn to T junction turn L (SP Ormskirk/Southport) continue to T junction where L (SP Ormskirk B5242) (66.14).
Passed Heaton Bridge Inn and take 1st R into Smith Lane (SP Halsall) proceed to X roads (A570) where straight over into Pinfold Lane and 1st L at foot of Canal Bridge into Small Lane North (68.09) proceed to T junction where L and then take 2nd R into Cut Lane (at Scarisbrick sign) continue to T junction turn L onto Clieves HIll and take 2nd R into Clieves Hill Lane (71.02). Descend with care down to T junction turn R on B5195 to take 1st L into Greens Lane. Continue over Canal Bridge through Lydiate sign (take care uneven road surface) to T junction and turn R into Hall Lane continue to T junction A5147. Turn L to finish at LYDIATE PARISH HALL on left (74.12)
